Fire crews have been tackling a large fire at the old Cwm Coke Colliery in Beddau, Rhondda Cynon Taf.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said they found large quantities of conveyor belting, car products and 100 tyres alight.

There were initial concerns over pressurised gas cylinders on site and a 200 metre safety cordon was set up.

Four crews were called out just before 1200 BST on Tuesday and continued to dampen down into the afternoon.

The coke works closed five years ago and the colliery, which at its height employed nearly 1,500 miners, shut in 1986.

The fire service said no buildings were affected.
