Flat body murder inquiry launched
Philip Bannan
A post mortem examination is being carried out
Police in Cardiff have launched a murder investigation following the discovery of a man's body at a block of flats in Roath, Cardiff.

Philip Bannan, who was 58, was found dead by officers at 0900 GMT on Saturday in Helen Place at the flat where he is believed to have lived.

The detective leading the inquiry said early indications were Mr Bannan, a single man, had been assaulted.

Scenes of crime officers are carrying out a forensic examination at the flat.

Officers gained entry to Mr Bannan's flat after receiving information from a member of the public.

A police incident room has been set up and the results of a Home Office post mortem examination are awaited.

Det Supt Paul Kemp confirmed police were treating the discovery of Mr Bannan's body as murder.

He said they were awaiting the results of the post mortem examination but the initial indications were that Mr Bannan, who was a single man, had been assaulted.

He added they had traced members of the dead man's family and family liaison officers were in touch with them.

The detective appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

"In particular, we would like to speak with anyone who may have seen Philip between 8.00pm on Thursday and 9.00am yesterday morning," Det Supt Kemp said.

"Anyone who may live nearby or who may have just been passing through the area may have noticed something suspicious or unusual.

"Regardless of how insignificant it may seem, the information they have may hold the key to our investigation.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the police incident room at Fairwater Police Station, on 02920 571 530, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
