Funeral for barrack death soldier
Soldier plays last post at funeral
The last post is sounded at the funeral of Pte Gavin Williams
A funeral service has been held for a solider reported to have died following a punishment exercise at an army barracks.

Private Gavin Williams, 22, from Hengoed, Rhymney Valley, collapsed in July at Lucknow Barracks, in Tidworth, Wiltshire.

Five servicemen were questioned and released on bail after his death.

Pte Williams' funeral service was held at St Catwg's church in Gelligaer, near his home village.

It was followed by a private burial at the church attended by soldier's family and close friends.

Pte Williams, who was in the 2nd Battalion Royal Welsh, died at Salisbury District Hospital on 3 July.

It is believed he had been taking part in a disciplinary exercise for an act of misbehaviour when he collapsed.

The coffin carrying the body of Pte Williams was brought to St Catwg's church by a horse drawn carriage.

During the service, Reverend David Waters paid tribute to Pte Williams.

He said: "His heart was in the community. He was seen in the community and he was loved by the community.

"People were attracted to Gavin because of what and who he was."

Pte Williams' family said they were pleased to "finally" lay him to rest.

His uncle, Gary Jenkins, said: "We were immensely proud of Gavin, who was loved and admired by all his family and friends, and will be greatly missed.

"Gavin has left a massive gap in all of our lives and will never, ever be forgotten."

After the funeral, Pte Williams was buried in St Catwg's churchyard where soldiers from his regiment fired three shots in the air and a bugler played the Last Post in tribute.
