Police have appealed for witnesses after an 80-year-old widow died following a car crash in Monmouthshire.

Clara Lewis was a passenger in a car involved in a collision with another car at Gwernesey, Usk, on Friday.

Mrs Lewis, from Llangwm, died in Nevill Hall Hospital at Abergavenny on Monday. Her family said she was "well-known, well-liked and well-respected" and had lived in south Wales after moving from Hereford 43 years ago.

Mrs Lewis lost her husband two-and-a-half years ago.

As well as four children, she had three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Sunday lunch

Mrs Lewis was very well known in the area where she spent much of her life cleaning and babysitting, while bringing up her family, her family said.

She was still cycling until she was about 60 and liked flowers and cooking and always had the family round for Sunday lunch.

She enjoyed going on coach trips after losing her husband and was a visitor to most of our well-known seaside resorts, the family said.

The fatal collision occurred on the B4235 on a right- hand bend at the junction with Monmouth Road, which leads to the Usk Gliding Club.

Gwent Police asked witnesses to contact them on 01633 643091.
