A seven-year-old boy is in a serious condition in hospital after getting into difficulties while swimming at a pool in a south Wales holiday park.

South Wales Police said the boy was pulled from the pool by staff at Splashland, in Trecco Bay, Porthcawl.

He got into difficulties while swimming at about 1130 BST on Tuesday.

The boy was given first aid and taken to the Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend, before being transferred to Cardiff's University Hospital of Wales.

His condition there is described as serious.

The boy's family, who are from the Birmingham area, are at his bedside.

In a statement, Parkdean Holidays, which owns the Trecco Bay holiday park, said: "A seven-year-old boy was rescued from the indoor pool at Trecco Bay, Porthcawl, and given immediate first aid.

"An ambulance was called and he was taken to the Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend.

"The pool is closed at the moment and we are holding an investigation."
