A south Wales business is aiming to produce millions of discs for the growing recordable DVD market.
Glenn Powell with some of the 15 million blank DVD-Rs set to be produced in south Wales
The man behind the multimillion-pound project is record producer and label boss Glenn Powell, who produced the Manic Street Preachers' first single.
MultiMedia Wales, based in Oakdale, believe it is the UK's only DVD-R blank media disc manufacturer.
It aims to start production next month and be making 15 million discs a year from September.
Mr Powell produced the Manics' first single Suicide Alley on his SBS Records label 16 years ago.
"It seems a long time ago - they've gone their way and I've gone mine, we're at completely different ends of the spectrum now."
The label has also recently been working with CrimeStoppers UK on anti-drugs roadshows for youngsters with bands such as Busted, D Side and Girls Aloud.
Glenn Powell produced the Manics' very first single back in June 1988
As for DVDs, the company's first target is to produce 440,000 blank discs a month and they intend to have around 30 workers when up to full production in the autumn.
Mr Powell and business partner Brian Thornhill believe the industry is running at up to 50% below demand, with DVD recorders set to have a big impact on home entertainment, with the cost going down, as well as use of the discs for home computers.
Mr Powell said: "DVD and video is a little like the relationship between CDs and 33 RPM vinyl records a few years ago. It's a growth area although we're sure there will still be people around who will cherish their video tapes, just as people do vinyl records."
The company unveiled its plans at an industry fair in Frankfurt and is holding discussions with two major brand names.
MultiMedia Wales is the first company to move onto the Oakdale business park, with the help of European funding from Objective One.
Keith Waters, from ExportAssist in Caerphilly, who has helped the company with its plans to sell across Europe, said:
"A great deal of work has gone into the background research. MultiMedia Wales has established that there is a significant market for its product and has positioned it correctly."
