Gwynedd councillor resigns after admitting wife attack

Cllr Gwilym Euros Roberts
Mr Roberts admitted he attacked his wife

A Gwynedd councillor awaiting sentencing for attacking his estranged wife has resigned.

Gwilym Euros Roberts, 40, admitted wounding Catrin Roberts at Blaenau Ffestiniog and is due to be sentenced at Caernarfon Crown Court in June.

The council confirmed Roberts' resignation as Llais Gwynedd's councillor for the Diffwys and Maenofferen ward.

"It is expected that the by-election will take place on 15 July," it said.

He pleaded guilty on 30 April to wounding his wife with the intention of causing her grievous bodily harm.

He was warned by the judge that he would face a lengthy custodial sentence.

Sentence was adjourned until 11 June, for psychiatric and pre-sentence reports to be prepared.

He was suspended by Llais Gwynedd after the incident.
