Bontnewydd traffic problems survey is launched

Four possible routes are under consideration

Public consultations have begun on plans to ease traffic congestion at Bontnewydd near Caernarfon in Gwynedd.

The Welsh Assembly Government is asking local residents to comment on one of four possible bypass routes to help cut down on queues in the village.

The study will last 12 weeks and include public exhibitions at Bontnewydd and Caernarfon.

Projected costs for the new roads range from £40m to £86m depending on the route chosen.

An online document on the changes notes the Assembly Government has already looked at a "package of transport measures".

This includes traffic management, parking measures, accident remedial measures, cycle routes and lanes, pedestrian crossings, and improvements to public transport.

It is noted that not doing anything will result in longer traffic queues both in the village of Bontnewydd and on roads in the surrounding area.

There are four options:

  • The cheapest would be a Bontnewydd bypass. That would run to the south of the village from the A499/A487 Goat roundabout at Llanwnda, rejoining the existing A487 to the north of Bontnewydd.
  • A longer Bontnewydd and Caernarfon bypass, following a route of 10.5km (6.52 miles) staying close the the edge of the Caernarfon Quarry (near the brick works) and the Cibyn industrial estate, to a junction with the A4086.
  • A shorter variation of the Bontnewydd/Caernarfon bypass route would be from near the Cibyn industrial estate in Caernarfon downhill past Crug to join the exsisting A487 at the Plas Menai roundabout.
  • The fourth option is for a Bontnewydd bypass and then an upgrade to the existing Caeathro/Pont Rug road.

The public exhibitions will be held at the Celtic Royal Hotel in Caernarfon on Tuesday and Wednesday 9 and 10 March from 1000-2000 GMT, and Thursday 11 March from 1000-1400 GMT, then on 16 March at Canolfan Bontnewydd, The Old School, Bontnewydd from 1000 to 2000 GMT.
