Sea event teaches safety and fun

Boat race
Organisers say the racing is thrilling to watch

A weekend of action-packed water sports is planned for Penmaenmawr in Conwy - with an event which promotes safety on and off the water.

The Thunder Tour Adrenaline Coast Festival features powerboat racing championships during the two-day event.

Organisers say the weekend will focus on all aspects of the community, with artists, sportsmen and women, food and funfairs.

It is the first time the event has visited Penmaenmawr.

Event organiser and director, Fiona Pascoe said it was very much "community based", and there was a lot of local involvement.

It aimed to show that it was possible to enjoy the beach and the sea, whilst using the proper equipment and not spoiling it for others, she said.

It is about promoting safety, but also having fun

"It is strong on the values of community life, and we have all sorts of things planned," said Ms Pascoe.

"On Sunday we will be having a service on the beach with local chaplain Royce Warner, that'll be at 9.30 on the big stage we have.

"There will be a chance to have a go at sailing, we will also have kite surfers, kids bus, junk band - which is a band playing instruments made out of junk - as well as local trade stands and a fun fair," she added.

It is the first time the event has visited Penmaenmawr and if the weather is good Ms Pascoe thinks the turn-out could be anything between 5,000 and 35,000.

"All the locals have put so much into this I really hope that the sun comes out," she said.

Campaign

One of those taking her own stall along is Debbie Turnbull from Colwyn Bay.

Mrs Turnbull's son, Christopher, drowned aged 15 in a river in Snowdonia.

Since his death Mrs Turnbull has campaigned tirelessly to improve education about water safety, visiting countless school to speak to pupils.

She says she feels she is making a difference.

"The feedback I get is 99% incredible from pupils and the teachers," she said.

"The teachers say they feel it is being pitched right, and the kids show their feelings, and tell me they think I am very brave to speak to them."

Mrs Turnbull added she felt the Penmaenmawr event was a brilliant idea.

"It is about promoting safety, but also having fun," she said.

The festival will be held on 20 and 21 June at Penmaenmawr beach.
