Two teenagers hurt in tent fire

The teenagers were camping at Llyn Cowlyd near the village of Trefriw

Two young women were airlifted to hospital after the wind caused flames from the stove they were using to set fire to their tent.

The 18-year-olds on a Duke of Edinburgh expedition, were taken by air ambulance to Ysbyty Gwynedd hospital in Bangor.

They were camping at Llyn Cowlyd, above the village of Trefriw in the Conwy Valley.

One had serious burns to her legs, the other burns to her hand and arm. Both are "comfortable" in hospital.

Emergency services warned campers of the dangers of using stoves in small tents.

The fire had been extinguished by other campers before North Wales Fire and Rescue officers arrived on the scene at about 1600 BST on Wednesday.

Paul Whybro, of North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said: "This year we have had a couple of people injured in camping stove fires.

"We would urge people, especially those who are wild camping, in small tents to follow all the safety instructions regarding the use of their stoves.

"In some situations these stoves are not suitable to be used inside a small tent and if people are not careful it can be a recipe for disaster," he added.
