'Fishfest' reels in young anglers
Fisherman
Boys and girls are welcome to take part in the fishing coaching sessions
Free angling coaching sessions are being held on the banks of a mid Wales canal to encourage children and young people to try out the sport.

The two-day 'Fishfest' event on the Montgomery Canal, Welshpool, has been organised by the Environment Agency Wales and British Waterways.

They hope it will help children get involved in something active and learn about the environment.

All equipment is provided free and children can just turn up to join in.

Claire Quigley, of the Environment Agency, said 'Fishfest' was part of a series of events being held throughout the summer.

She said the aim was to "get youngsters out from the TV, out from the computer games" and involved in activities on the river and canal bank.

The angling taster sessions were also teaching children more about the environment.

Ms Quigley said the children would have a hands-on lesson to learn to learn how to fish and would be provided with all they kit they needed such as rods, bait boxes and seats.

Perch and roach

"Hopefully they will get to catch some fish and learn how to handle the fish and be taught by a qualified instructor all about fishing and the environment," she added.

Shortly after the start of the first day, some new anglers had already landed a catch with perch and roach proving the main prize of the day.

Chris Smith, Powys canal tourism project officer, said: "Angling is a popular recreation among all ages and this event provides the perfect opportunity for young people to try their hand at something which is both relaxing and challenging."

About 18 youngsters had already signed up for the coaching sessions, which take place between 1000 BST and 1500 BST on Wednesday and Thursday, and more turned up on the first day.
