Guilty over sex register failure
Derek Williams leaving Dolgellau Magistrates Court
Derek Williams leaves the court at Dolgellau
A paedophile from Gwynedd spared jail after admitting downloading child pornography, has pleaded guilty to failing to register as a sex offender.

Derek Williams, 46, from Blaenau Ffestiniog, was spared jail in January, partly because the Home Secretary asked judges to use prisons sparingly.

Williams claims he did not know he had to register as a sex offender within three days.

The hearing at Dolgellau Magistrates Court was adjourned for a week.

Williams was given a six-month term of imprisonment suspended for two years after he admitted downloading pornographic pictures of children when he appeared before Judge John Rogers, QC in January.

The judge said he had to take into consideration a Home Office request to jail only the most serious offenders because of the problem of prison overcrowding.
