Fish farm proposals are rejected

Local people had opposed plans for the fish farm
Plans for a fish farm have been turned down by Gwynedd council's planning committee.

Sustainable Fish Farming had wanted to erect seven large sheds to produce 300 tonnes of fish every year at Abergwyngregyn near Bangor.

Many local residents had opposed the proposals.

They claimed the planned farm was adjacent to a nature reserve and would have spoiled the area.

Sustainable Fish Farming had said the development, on the banks of the Menai Straits, could have created jobs in the area.

Local residents were worried about the size of the buildings, as well as possible smells.

The North Wales Wildlife Trust had also expressed concern about the possible effect on the Traeth Lafan nature reserve, which is home to otters and many species of birds.
