Motorists were warned about the hazard from smoke by police
A fire near the A55 at the Penmaenbach tunnels caused traffic disruption on Tuesday.

North Wales Fire Service say the rubbish fire near the tunnels spread to the mountainside, with smoke causing a hazard for motorists.

Eight fire appliances were called to the scene.

At the height of the fire, four water ladders and a turntable ladder were there.

North Wales Police say that warning signs were put up and traffic was able to move, albeit slowly.

The polystyrene fire was discovered at an Edmund Nuttall site off the eastbound carriageway at 0815 BST on Tuesday.

North Wales Fire Service said it was caused by a grinder which ignited between 30 and 100 sheets of polystyrene.

The fire then spread to around 60,000 square metres of gorse.

Firefighters finished dealing with the blaze shortly before 1900 BST.
