The coral is a relic of Denbigh's tropical past
|
A 350 million-year-old coral has been discovered which experts believe dates back to when parts of Denbighshire were under water. The piece of branching coral was found by volunteers helping to create a new footpath. It is thought the area would once have been under a tropical sea which was populated by corals, sponges, and prehistoric animals. The coral is on display at Denbigh Library and Museum. Volunteers were clearing an old quarry to create a new stretch of the Mount Wood path from Smithfield Road to Groes Road when they discovered the coral. Local schools and youth projects took part in the project to clear the path, which was funded by rural regeneration agency Cadwyn Clwyd.
