Rugby legends' cricket fundraiser

Will Greenwood
Ex-Lion Greenwood will captain the Union side at the match

Some of the best-known names in British rugby are to take part in a charity cricket match in Flintshire.

Rugby league legends will take on rugby union stars on 16 August at Alder Meadow in Pontblyddyn.

Former England centre and World Cup winner Will Greenwood will captain the union side against a league team led by ex-Widnes and Wigan star Joe Lydon.

It is hoped England rugby union coach Martin Johnson will also play in the Wooden Spoon charity fundraiser.

Wooden Spoon is the children's charity of British rugby, and has raised more than £15m for disadvantaged children in its 25 year history.

The event is being organised by Will Greenwood's father Richard, himself a former rugby international.

Mr Greenwood, who lives in Rhos-on-sea, Conwy, said: "I rang Will and said: 'Guess what you're doing on 16 August?'

"I then had a similar conversation with Joe Lydon, and he agreed to captain the other side."

As well as the two captains, Mr Greenwood said those names confirmed so far include union stars Neil Back, Charlie Hodgson, Tim Stimpson, Jason Leonard, Simon Halliday and Dusty Hare.

Representing the world of rugby league, among others, are Garry Schofield, Andy Northey, Pat Richards and Jonathan Griffiths.

Mr Greenwood said: "If Martin Johnson plays it will be a real boost.

"He has said he wants to play, and will if he can, but there is a bit of a question mark because he has training commitments the week before."

He added: "We've got some big names in there. One or two of them are knocking on a bit, but they're decent cricket players."

Former British Lion Will Greenwood said: "The game is more important than the Ashes. This is bragging rights between league and union, so it's a very serious contest."

Weather-permitting, it is hoped the stars will play 20 overs each. On the day, there will also be a competition for local schools.
