Playground's future still unclear

The Venture
The Venture was established more than 30 years ago

A decision on whether to close a play scheme on a deprived Wrexham estate has again been deferred.

The management committee of the Venture, Caia Park, met on Tuesday to decide its future after Wrexham council cut its funding by 70% to £40,000.

Centre manager Malcolm King said the committee was seeking further clarification talks with the council.

The council announced cuts to the Venture's funding to allow money to go to other projects in the area.

The Venture had been due to close a week ago, but decided to remain open following a revised offer from the council.

Originally the project would have received its £40,000 in September, but the council said it could have the money now, subject to conditions.

Mr King has said the project cannot remain open long term on such a reduced core revenue, but the committee had to consider accepting the money to create time to find funding from other sources.

Launched in 1978, the Venture is used by 600 children. Five of its 27 staff have already been laid off.
