Festive mystery of mountain tree

Geriant Roberts said he has no idea who decorated the tree

Walkers at a Denbighshire beauty spot have been treated to a festive surprise after a wild tree was decorated with tinsel and baubles.

The decorations mysteriously appeared on a fir tree in an area known as the Panorama, near Llangollen.

Local man Geraint Roberts spotted the tree and took a photograph.

He said: "It's on the top of the mountain, in the middle of nowhere, nicely decorated. It [the mountain] must be 1,200ft (366m) high."

Mr Roberts, a car body repairer, was walking in the area when he spotted the tree.

He added: "I don't know if it was kids who put the decorations up, or whether it's some kind of memorial, but it was nice to see."

Rumour has it, it was an elderly gentleman with a white beard wearing a red coat. Merry Christmas.

I have not seen this tree but I feel they may have copied the idea from a resovior nr Bury in Lancashire, my daugher used to live in this area and when we went for a walk around this resovior at christmas time every year more and more trees where decorated and cards where left remembering people who had died or where ill asking people to stop and say a small prayer. All I can say it was very moving also some of the cards where just from strangers wishing other strangers best wises.

Myself and my friends camp up on the mountain every year before christmas.

We happened to come across the tree while walking back home and decided that later on that day we would buy decorations and decorate the tree as we thought that it wouldn't be just us that go up that mountain as it is a public pathway, and to put people in the festive spirit
