An elderly man and a woman have been killed and four people have been injured after a collision involving three vehicles.

The crash happened at lunchtime on Friday on the A494 at New Brighton near Mold in Flintshire.

North Wales Police said two of those injured are seriously hurt and have been taken to hospital.

A teenager has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and is in police custody.

Emergency services and the air ambulance were called to the scene at around 1330 GMT on Friday.

The couple who died were from Ruthin in Denbighshire and were in a Ford Focus.

The driver of the Corsa, who also lives locally, suffered a serious leg injury and was taken to the Countess of Chester hospital.

A couple in the third vehicle involved in the crash, a Daihatsu, suffered minor injuries and North Wales Police said they are not believed to have needed hospital treatment.

Police said the teenager under arrest is also from the Mold area and he was driving a Peugeot car.

The A494 has been closed from the Wylfa Roundabout in Mold to the roundabout at New Brighton.

It was still closed four hours after the crash and it was not known when it would reopen.

Police are appealing for witnesses to contact the Eastern Roads Policing Unit on 0845 6071001 ( Welsh language line) or 0845 6071002 (English language line).
