Some workers at a Flintshire-based building company which went into administration last week are being made redundant, it has been announced.

One hundred and thirty four staff at David McLean's contracting division are losing their jobs out of a total workforce of 320.

Administrators Deloitte & Touche said effort would continue to secure other parts of the business.

A further 45 jobs are being axed at a Gwynedd trailer manufacturer.

David McLean went into administration last Friday, and the company blamed the downturn in the property market for the move.

It was later revealed its debts were likely to run up to £100m and that job losses were likely.

Orderly closure

Joint administrator Nick Edwards said: "Unfortunately it has been necessary to make 134 employees redundant out of a total contracting workforce of 139 staff.

"We have retained a skeleton staff to work with us to effect an orderly closure of the business.

"We would reiterate that there have been no redundancies in the house building operation, David McLean Homes, and we continue to trade this business while we seek to sell it as a going concern, and we will provide a further update as things progress."

The group is a house builder, building contractor and property developer operating in the north and south west of England, the Midlands, and south Wales.

Building delays

Its Deeside headquarters currently employs 130 staff with another 40 in Cardiff, 235 in Shrewsbury and 105 working on locations.

North Wales Police have said a £2.5m refurbishment of its Colwyn Bay headquarters would be delayed because of the problems surrounding David McLean.

It also has a building contract involving Prestatyn School and another 11 housing developments around Wales.

• Meanwhile, Ifor Williams Trailers which employs more than 400 workers at sites in Cynwyd, Corwen and Deeside is making 45 redundancies.

It is understood most will be at the Cynwyd site

A spokesman said the current economic downturn was affecting the company's business and "has compounded the seasonal drop in demand for trailers".

"We are working closely with union representatives and our workforce clearly understands the challenges the business faces," the spokesman added.

The firm made 18 workers redundant at the beginning of October.
