Ancient bridge's partial collapse

The Rhewl to Llanbedr bridge
Foundations on one side of the bridge have been affected

An ancient bridge carrying a country lane over the River Clwyd in Denbighshire has partially collapsed.

The old stone bridge, which is listed because of its age, carries the road from Rhewl to Llanbedr over the river.

Local people say work was already being carried out on the bridge and the lane was closed.

It appears high river levels may have contributed. Debris appears to have built up around scaffolding at the bridge and water has eroded the sides.

The foundations of one side of the bridge have been affected and it has fallen a couple of feet on that side.

Workers have now dug up a large trench on one side of the bridge so that if the river floods then the whole bridge will not be washed away.
