Death crash lorry driver arrested

The westbound A55 was closed for nearly seven hours

A lorry driver has been arrested on suspicion of careless driving after a crash killed a 10-year-old girl.

Two cars and an Irish lorry were involved in the incident on the westbound side of the A55 near Caerwys, Flintshire, on Sunday evening.

The girl, whose identity has not been released, was a back seat passenger in one car with her sister, 13, who is in intensive care.

The collision involved a heavy goods vehicle, a Rover and a Nissan Micra.

Helicopter

The North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, ambulance service and police helicopter were also called to the scene.

Four occupants in the Rover were taken to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, where the 10-year-old girl was pronounced dead.

Her sister - believed to have suffered leg injuries - remains in a serious but stable condition, police said. The two other occupants were given precautionary checks.

The road was closed for nearly seven hours while officers investigated the scene.

The police spokeswoman added: "The driver of the HGV is currently in custody assisting with our inquiries after being arrested on suspicion of careless driving."
