Breath test for underage drinkers
Underage drinking
It is hoped youngsters will see how alcohol impairs their actions
Underage drinkers will be offered breath tests as part of a police initiative in Wrexham.

Operation Virulent aims to let youngsters see the effects of their drinking, and the results of tests could also be passed on to parents.

The scheme also hopes to identify which stores are selling alcohol to children.

Town inspector, Chris Beasley said: "We all know that despite all the publicity and warnings, youths are still drinking alcohol while under age."

He added: "The result is often anti-social and unacceptable behaviour.

"Sometimes that behaviour can lead to a criminal conviction, which is something to avoid when looking for that first job."

The operation, launched this week, aims to show youngsters how much alcohol can impair their judgement and actions.

Youngsters under 18 caught drinking will be offered the breathalyser.

A police spokeswoman said the breath tests were similar to those used on drivers.

Insp Beasley said the operation would also help identify brands of alcohol and its suppliers.

The initiative is supported by the Wrexham Community Safety Partnership, and if successful, it is thought it could be extended to other areas.
