Detectives say they are scrutinising hundreds of hours of CCTV footage in the search for the killer of a 90-year-old widow in Flintshire.

It is two weeks since Elsie Hughes died in hospital, after being brutally attacked in her home in the village of Abermorddu.

She was left for dead in the living room of her home on 8 September.

The murder came just weeks after the retired school cook, who lived alone, was a victim of distraction burglary.

Officers are still trying to trace their chief suspect - a man wearing a hooded top who was seen slamming the door of Mrs Hughes' home on the night of the attack

Detectives say a number of positive lines of inquiry are being followed but they still want to hear from any members of the public who may have any information.

Det Chief Supt Ross Duffield, who is heading the murder investigation, said from the amount of information gained and the calls from the public it was "quite clear that people are still anxious to help with our investigation".

"As part and parcel of this work officers continue to examine hundreds of hours of CCTV footage that has been obtained from a number of public and private locations."

Scores of officers are still working on the investigation but no trace of the mystery man in the hooded top has been found.

He is described as being around 5ft 10, between 25 and 30, and with dark short hair with a fringe but no parting.

'Acting suspiciously'

He was wearing a light-coloured, baggy 'hoodie' with It is believed a dark navy jumper underneath and had dark short hair. The man is also described as having no distinctive accent and softly spoken.

"I repeat my appeal; if anyone knows of someone, a close friend, acquaintance or a family member who may have changed his appearance, disposed of clothing or who may be acting suspiciously or changed their general behaviour since the night in question to contact us immediately," said Mr Duffield.

Earlier this week around 50 people in the community met to discuss their concerns about security in the wake of Mrs Hughes' murder.

Representatives from the police, the neighbourhood watch, and Flintshire council heard residents concerns.

One elderly lady said she had become very nervous since Mrs Hughes' murder, saying she was "really terrified" in her home.

People who took part in the meeting were given free door locks and alarms, and advice about how to use them.
