Petition over car parking charges

Ceredigion council said parking was free for nearly six months a year

Campaigners fighting for free parking outside a GPs' surgery in Ceredigion have collected an 1,800-name petition.

People picking up prescriptions in New Quay have to pay for a ticket even though they might only be in the surgery for a few minutes.

The campaign is being supported by Ceredigion MP Mark Williams, who is calling for dedicated parking places.

But Ceredigion Council said the charges were only in force during the tourist season between Easter and October.

MP Mr Williams said the campaign had built-up around the concerns of local residents who had to pay for a parking ticket while they collected prescriptions.

He has met campaigners who are to hand the petition to Ceredigion council.

'Clear signal'

The MP said: "There is a strong feeling in New Quay against the car park charges that are being levied against those who merely want to call in to collect a prescription from the surgery.

"It is to the great credit of local residents that they have come together in such force with this petition to give a clear signal to the county council and to the Hywel NHS Dda Trust that something has to give.

"A dedicated area for parking for the surgery users would be a great help and would remove much of the concern that currently exists."

A Ceredigion council spokesman said for nearly six months parking was free outside the surgery.

He added: "Since the end of October, there is no charge for parking a car at New Quay's Church Road car park.

"However short-term car parking charges will come into force again, next year, between the Monday preceding Easter to 31 October.

"When the surgery referred to was originally constructed, the only free car parking provision requested was for staff employed at the surgery."

Parking tickets cost car drivers up to £1.70 for a two-hour stay.
