An 85-year-old woman has been discovered dead in the River Severn in Powys, says Dyfed-Powys Police.

The pensioner's body was found in Newtown on Monday afternoon after she was reported missing by a neighbour on Saturday.

It follows the discovery of a woman's body near Brecon after a major search along the River Usk.

Police said they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident in Newtown.

The force said following a two-day search by rescue teams and a dog-handling unit, the body was discovered on the river bank by a police officer.

A spokeswoman for Dyfed-Powys Police said: "Following a two-day search, which included specialist search and rescue teams and the dog-handling unit, the body of the female was found by a police officer at approximately lunchtime on the banks of river.

"Dyfed-Powys Police is not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident."
