A man killed himself following a row with his girlfriend who had discovered he had kissed her sister, an inquest has found.

Jimmy James, 23, of Llangoedmor, near Cardigan, was found hanged in woodland near his home on 17 March.

The inquest in Aberystwyth heard Mr James and his partner Katy Davies had argued after she read a text message from her sister on his mobile phone.

Ceredigion coroner Peter Brunton recorded a verdict of suicide.

The inquest centred on the interpretation of an argument between Mr James, a former Wales under 18 footballer, and Ms Davies following an evening out on 14 March.

Mr Brunton said according to police Ms Davies had spotted a text message on Mr James's phone from her sister, Laura, and had challenged him over it.

But Ms Davies denied the argument, during which she ended their relationship, had anything to do with the text message.

Mr Brunton said: "According to police you had looked at Jimmy's mobile phone message from your sister Laura, and you challenged him over it."

Mr Brunton said Mr James and Laura Davies had kissed a few weeks previously and that was what the "row was about".

A tearful Ms Davies said: "I don't remember saying that and that message was not on his telephone. Our argument had nothing to do with that.

"The argument was stupid and was over after two minutes. It had nothing to do with the message on the phone."

The inquest also heard from Mr James' brother Jonathan, who saw Jimmy shortly after his row with Ms Davies.

Jonathan said his brother had been "quiet", was "cut up" and said he had "blown it".

Mr James was a well-known local footballer, who played for Newcastle Emlyn and previously Carmarthen Town in the Welsh Premier League.

Recording a verdict of suicide, Mr Brunton said: "I find there was an altercation between Jimmy James and his girlfriend.

"He had received a message from Laura Davies and it referred to snogging and she (Katy Davies) denies this, if I can call it, peccadillo.

"I find as a result of this telephone message that they had an altercation."

Mr Brunton added Mr James had inferred his relationship had ended when he said to his brother that he had "blown it".

The inquest also heard that Mr James' body was found by his brother Jeremy, a day after he had been reported missing to police.
