Fire-fighters have been called to a blaze which badly damaged farm buildings near Welshpool in Powys.

Mid and West Wales Fire Service were alerted at 2100 GMT on Friday to a large fire at Great Hem Farm, Forden, near the border with Shropshire.

It is the third major farm fire in the area in the last few weeks.

Water was pumped from a river a mile away as 50 fire-fighters tackled the blaze. The fire was still burning on Saturday afternoon.

Mid and West Wales Fire Service said the police were in attendance at the dairy and beef farm but it will be a while before any investigation was carried out.

Flames could be seen from miles away at the height of the fire.

A nearby road has been closed and diversions set up on Saturday morning.

Scottish Power turned off electricity in the area as a precaution.

It is the third major farm fire in the area in the last few weeks.

Fire-fighters worked through the night to tackle two separate fires in farm buildings at Woodlands Farm at Forden on 18 October and also on 26 September.
