A care worker has been jailed for nine years for carrying out a "vicious" sex attack on an elderly patient at a nursing home.

Gareth Jones, 22, from Trecastle, near Sennybridge, Powys, attacked the 77-year-old while getting her ready for bed in her room.

She required emergency surgery following attack at The Mountains Nursing Home in Libanus near Brecon.

The judge at Newport Crown Court told Jones he caused "appalling injuries".

Jones who was found guilty of sexual activity with a patient by a care worker at an earlier hearing showed no emotion as he was handed his sentence.

The court had previously heard the assault took place on the night of 13 February 2007 as Jones was on a night shift and was putting the woman to bed.

It defies belief that a person of Jones' age could have behaved in such a callous and perverted way

He was working alone, which is against the nursing home's protocol, and later asked a member of staff to lie and say he had worked with her all night.

The woman needed emergency surgery after losing a litre of blood.

Prosecutor Ieuan Morris said: "Jones subjected this elderly female resident to a cruel and deplorable sex act.

"Had she not undergone emergency treatment at hospital she could well have died because she lost so much blood.

"She was subjected to a shocking, pitiless sexual assault by Jones which left her with painful and harrowing injuries.

"It defies belief that a person of Jones's age could have behaved in such a callous and perverted way."

Vulnerable victim

The court heard Jones was taken on as a kitchen hand at the nursing home but was quickly transferred to the role of a care assistant.

Judge Philip Richards told him: "I am astonished - you should never have been given such a job.

"A person of your experience and with learning difficulties should never have been contemplated for such a role."

The judge added: "Although you denied this offence the verdict of the jury was the only logical verdict.

"For some reason known only to you you decided to conduct a vicious attack against this lady whose care was your responsibility.

"You were engaged in a sexual assault on her and you caused her appalling injuries.

"She was a vulnerable and helpless victim."
