Police are appealing for information
Police are hunting a gang who stole a safe during a raid on a building society in Knighton, Powys.

The raiders are said to have smashed windows and doors at the Dudley Building Society branch in Broad Street in the early hours of Friday.

Police are understood to have been alerted by a passing postman. The raiders escaped in a dark vehicle.

Former town mayor Roger Bright said it was "a shock to the system" as the town was relatively peaceful.

It is thought the raiders dragged the safe to a waiting vehicle.

Dyfed-Powys Police would not say how much money had been stolen.

'Quiet and peaceful'

A force spokeswoman said a dark-coloured vehicle was seen leaving the scene with a number of males inside.

Town councillor Roger Bright said: "It's a shock to the system because Knighton is normally a quiet and peaceful town, although there have been a number of house break-ins over the last few weeks."

Mr Bright added that a postman had witnessed the raiders at work and phoned the police.

People with information are asked to contact Dyfed-Powys Police on 0845 330 2000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
