A new multi million-pound shopping complex, which has been officially opened in Aberystwyth, has created 230 full and part-time jobs.

Ystwyth Retail Park has been built on the site of the town's old livestock market and boasts clothing, pet food and footwear stores, and a supermarket.

The development, built at a cost of 15m, was opened by the town's mayor, Michael Jones.

He said the complex marked an "exciting period for Aberystwyth".

Mr Jones added: "With more than 200 new jobs created, and the additional shoppers that will be attracted to the town by the new development, the financial benefits to Aberystwyth are clear to see.

"We are developing a reputation as a progressive and ambitious council and Aberystwyth is now known as a key location of economic growth and development."

Aberystwyth Silver Band entertained local dignitaries at the official opening after developers Liberty Mercian designed the retail park around its hall.

The firm also gave the band's home a five-figure sum upgrade, including the addition of a new porch, new windows fitted throughout and landscaping outside.

Emyr Williams of Liberty Mercian said the company was looking at other "development opportunities" in the area.

A decade ago the firm built the town's Rhiedol Retail Park, which is home to national retailers.
