A man accused of stealing valuable antique maps from the National Library of Wales has appeared in court at Aberystwyth charged with theft.

Joseph Peter Bellwood, 52, is charged with seven counts of theft from the library, also in Aberystwyth, between 9 March 2000 and 4 January 2001.

The defendant did not enter a plea at Wednesday's hearing.

Mr Bellwood, from Colchester, will now appear at a further hearing at Swansea Crown Court on 8 October.

He spoke only to confirm his name and address.

Magistrates extended his conditional bail.

Mr Bellwood, wearing a blue jacket and white trousers, then left the court with his solicitor.
