Pit disaster remembered
Gresford Pit disaster
The explosion killed 266 miners and rescuers
Over 60 years after a pit explosion that killed nearly 300 miners and rescuers, a plaque listing the names of all the victims is to be unveiled.

Over 200 women were widowed by the disaster at the Gresford Mine near Wrexham, and more than 800 children were left fatherless.

In 1982, a simple memorial was unveiled by the Prince and Princess of Wales.

But campaigners like Marjorie Lloyd Morrison - whose father was one of 266 who died - wanted more.

Names are to be added to the memorial
And after a two-year fight, a plaque listing the names of the dead is to be unveiled.

"I can go and visit Mum's grave, but I can't visit dad's," said Marjorie Lloyd Morrison.

"So the memorial means that much to us - to be able to go and see his name there and just sit and look at it and think what we've achieved. Not just for us but for many people."

The unveiling will be marked with the performance of a play which charts the disaster's effect on the community.

The performance is sold out - perhaps showing that the memories of that terrible day are still alive in the community devastated more than 60 years ago.
