Fairground safety probe begins
Bolt, Coney Beach
The large bolt struck the teenager on the head
Tests are to begin on a bolt that came off a ride at a Welsh fairground, fracturing the skull of a teenage girl.

The Health and Safety Executive will try to establish how the bolt came to strike the 17-year-old as she walked passed the ride at Coney Beach in Porthcawl on Friday evening.

Phillipa Howell, from Port Talbot, is in a comfortable condition at Morriston Hospital in Swansea.

It is believed the part flew off the Skymaster ride at Coney Beach fairground in Porthcawl as she was walking nearby.

She was taken to the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend after the accident before being transferred to Morriston.

Closed: The Skymaster ride was shut down
A spokesperson for the Health and Safety Executive has confirmed that the Skymaster ride at Coney Beach in Porthcawl has been closed while an investigation takes place.

He said: "An investigation is being undertaken and a prohibition notice has been served on the ride concerned."

The spokesperson confirmed that the investigation had started.

Tom Evans, a retired fairground worker from Coney Beach, said that the situation was "a nightmare".

"This is particularly serious because of the 17-year-old lady and because it is a head injury," he said.

It is not the first time that safety has been of concern at Coney beach.

In 1994, a nine-year-old boy was killed on the water chute and just last year a young girl suffered bruising on the same Skymaster ride at the centre of the current investigation.
