The Wrexham brewery could get a new lease of life
The decommissioning of the former Wrexham Lager brewery has been halted as managers at Carlsberg Tetley consider producing another lager brand at the site.

Clwyd South MP Martyn Jones met with Carlsberg Tetley's operations manager John Smith in Northampton on Tuesday to discuss the implications of a major brewery merger bid.

Mr Jones has urged the government to call in a bid by Whitbread brewery's owner Interbrew for Bass.

He said it would create too big a brewing company and would cause the closure of many breweries around Britain.

He said if the government either rejects the bid or allows it with conditions, it would mean that Whitbread would have to dispense with some of its brands.

Mr Jones said he had outlined this situation to Carlsberg Tetley and received a positive response to a suggestion they could buy some of these brands and brew them in the former Wrexham Lager brewery.

He said this would probably be a short to medium term measure, but it would create jobs, and would improve the chances of a permanent micro brewery producing Wrexham Lager in the town.

Mr Smith said: "Carlsberg Tetley believe this is very good news both for Wrexham and the tradition of brewing in the town.

"With co-operation we can work towards retaining brewing in Wrexham and creating some jobs, whatever the long-term future of the main brewery site."
