Porthmadog canal body murder inquiry continues

The community of Porthmadog has been shocked by the death of 22-year-old Ffion Wyn Roberts

An investigation is continuing into the murder of a young woman whose body was found in an old drainage canal.

Police said Ffion Wyn Roberts, 22, had been socialising with friends on Friday night in Tremadog. Her body was discovered on Saturday in Porthmadog.

Initial investigations showed Ms Roberts had been strangled.

Her body was removed from a stretch of water known as Y Cyt in the town centre. Further forensic examinations of the area are continuing on Monday.

Ms Roberts, whose family is said to be well-known in Porthmadog, had been out with friends in the Union pub in Tremadog until about 0330 BST on Saturday, then is believed to have walked towards her home along Church Street.

The two towns are only a mile apart.

North Wales Police said a family liaison officer was supporting her family.

A large area of the town along the banks of the old canal has been cordoned off by police since the incident.

Stephen Green works in a cafe close to where the body was found, and was in work on Saturday when Ms Roberts' body was discovered at 1400 BST.

"From the start, we saw the policemen cordoning off the place, that's when we started going out," he said.

"The helicopter came over and landed in the school then a police car came around and picked that person up, and so they could start looking at how they were going to bring the body out.

Mr Green said quite a few people had come to try to see what was happening but added: "The police have stopped them from coming and looking."

Det Supt Peter Chalinor from North Wales Police has appealed for witnesses to come forward.

"Unfortunately there was a tragedy in Porthmadog," he said.

"We found a young lady in a water flow there. I'm now aware that she died violently and the young lady was strangled."

The stretch of water linked Tremadog and Porthmadog in the 1800s.

Anyone who was in the area of Tremadog or Porthmadog between the hours of 0330am and 0800 on Saturday is asked to call the police's incident room on 01745 538 474.
