Young woman's death in Porthmadog 'unexplained'

Police say they are treating the death of young woman found in an inlet of water as "unexplained".

Officers were called to Porthmadog in Gwynedd at 1400 BST on Saturday after reports a body had been found in an stretch of water leading to a river.

North Wales Police initially said the death was not being treated as suspicious but now says it is "unexplained" and are investigating.

They are appealing for witnesses to contact them.

North Wales Fire Service were also called to the scene, known locally as "Y Cyt", close to Tesco and the Coliseum Cinema, on Saturday afternoon.

The police helicopter was also reported to be active in the area.

In a statement, North Wales Police said: "The death is being treated as unexplained at present and the circumstances of the incident are being investigated by a dedicated team of officers."

The woman has not yet been named.
