Welsh language campaign call

A new organisation to campaign for the Welsh Language is being proposed by language supporters.

Those behind the call include Plaid Cymru's Cynog Dafis AM for Mid and West Wales.

He said much more effective lobbying is needed to ensure the Assembly takes the lead in promoting the language.

Cynog Dafis: language is a key consideration

There is only been one debate on the Welsh Language in the Assembly's chamber.

And Mr Dafis said that is proof that the language lobby is not working.

In a speech at next week's National Eisteddfod in Llanelli, he is due to explain why he and others want a new organisation to be set up.

They envisage it bringing together a wide range of groups who already support the Welsh Language in different ways.

'Key consideration'

"The language has been fairly marginal, very marginal in fact - two discussions about the future of Wales," Mr Dafis said.

"I think the language is a key consideration in the future of Wales - or should be - and that needs, of course, organisation."

As one of its founder members, Mr Dafis said he was not being critical of the Welsh Language Association.

But he said there are many who would feel more comfortable in an organisation not advocating the Welsh Language Society's campaigning methods of non-violent direct action.
