A 27-year-old man has been charged in the Bahamas with the murder of a Welsh businessman.

Hywel Jones, 55, from north Wales but later living in the Vale of Glamorgan, died in hospital a month after being shot in the head in April 2009.

Franklyn Stubbs, from Moncur Alley on the island, has been remanded in custody until Monday.

The Royal Bahamas Police said the case was still being investigated as they search for more suspects.

Mr Jones was shot in the head as he arrived for work at Gambier Village last April and died in hospital the following month.

Witnesses said a gunman approached on foot, shot him in the head and fled on a motorcycle.

Mr Jones worked in the finance sector before setting up his own business, Britannia Investment, and had been described as a "mover and shaker" on the local business scene.

He was a former director of The Bankers Association of The Bahamas and The Bahamas Institute of Bankers.

The court appearance on Monday is expected to be a fixture hearing, to decide whether the case can proceed to trial.
