The former Labour leader and ex-MP for Ebbw Vale, Michael Foot, has died at the age of 96.

The veteran parliamentarian and writer spanned a long political era - from campaigning to be an MP in 1945 to becoming Labour leader in 1980 to celebrating his 90th birthday with Tony Blair at a party at Downing Street.

Mr Foot represented Ebbw Vale in parliament after a by-election in 1960, following in the footsteps of his great political mentor Aneurin Bevan. He served the south Wales valleys constitutency - which became the Blaenau Gwent seat - for 32 years.
