Fallen climber with broken leg rescued in Snowdonia

Location map
The rescue happened near Devil's Kitchen in freezing temperatures

A climber has been rescued in Snowdonia after falling 40 metres in a gully.

The man in his mid 20s, from Cardiff, was with a woman colleague from a south Wales mountaineering club.

The pair were ice climbing on the gully at Cwm Idwal near Devil's Kitchen. The man was held by his safety rope during the fall in which he broke his leg.

His climbing partner stayed with him in freezing temperatures for nearly three hours while other climbers raised mountain and RAF rescue teams.

Heavy snow meant the first attempt to airlift him to safety had to be abandoned.

The Ogwen Valley mountain rescue team then climbed into the gully, lowering him 150 metres so that a rescue helicopter from RAF Valley could reach him.

He is recovering at Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor.
