Two 17-year-old sixth formers killed in a crash which has left another boy critically ill have been named.

Alex Jones and Royston Thomas, both from Bridgend, died when their car hit a wall in Ogmore by Sea, Vale of Glamorgan, late on Monday night.

They were both sixth form pupils at Brynteg Comprehensive School.

A third pupil, also 17, is said to be in a critical but stable condition at Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend. Police have appealed for witnesses.

The family of the two dead teenagers have paid tribute to them in statement issued via South Wales Police.

"Alex was a popular boy who had lots of friends. He was loving and caring and always smiling and laughing. I will miss his smile and his presence."

His father Stephen said: "We enjoyed playing golf and snooker together - he was always fun to be around and lived life to the full. He will leave a massive void in our lives."

Royston's family described him as a loving son and "very proud Englishman" who was "very popular with everyone who knew him".

The statement read: "He was part of a large group of friends who had been great friends for years. He was a joker and saw humour in everything.

"He was passionate about cars and his proudest moment was when he passed his test. His other passion was rugby and he played scrum half for Tondu RFC for seven years.

'Distressing time'

"He worked hard both in school and at his part time job. He adored his sister and could never say no to anyone."

The boys' headteacher Chris Davies said the school was "deeply shocked and saddened at this tragic accident".

He said: "Brynteg Comprehensive School is a close-knit community, and the teachers, governors, pupils and staff are offering each other support and comfort during this distressing time."

South Wales Police said the crash happened on Ogmore Road at 2300 GMT when the black Suzuki Swift car the three boys were travelling in collided with a wall.

Officers are appealing for anyone who saw the crash or the car being driven before it, to contact them.

Anyone who has information should call South Wales Police on 101.
