Inquiry into cause of fatal fire

House fire in Holywell
Firefighters said the property was well alight

An investigation has been launched after a man was found dead after a fire at a house in Flintshire.

The man, 50, was found after fire crews were called to a property in Brynford Street, Holywell at around 1600 GMT on Monday.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters brought the blaze under control after finding the two-storey property well alight.

An inquiry is under way but the cause is not though to be suspicious.

Gareth Griffiths, of North Wales fire service who was at the scene, said: "When they arrived, firefighters discovered a fully developed fire within the property.

"They managed to enter the property and extinguish the fire very quickly.

"Sadly, they discovered a casualty within the property and once the fire was extinguished, we started a joint fire investigation with North Wales Police."

Mr Griffiths said firefighters were aware that somebody was likely to have been in the property.

"The caller had stated that they thought that somebody might be in the building so we treat calls like that as if there's somebody present, therefore, we treated it as if there was somebody within the property," he said.

He added: "We're confident there's no suspicious circumstances.

"The investigation itself is concentrated on the living room area of the property and hopefully we will be in a position to conclude the investigation this morning."

A post mortem examination is likely to be carried out on Wednesday.

The fire service said crews were in the area carrying out free fire safety checks and offering advice to occupants.
