Brothers rescued from house fire

Two brothers were rescued from a fire after they fell asleep during the early hours, leaving a chip pan unattended.

Firefighters were called to a house in Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, at about 0115 GMT, and helped the brothers out.

The men, both in their thirties, were taken to hospital from Cadoxton with smoke inhalation and superficial burns.

The ground floor of the house was badly damaged and South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said they were lucky as there were no smoke alarms fitted.

Two crews from Barry were sent to the fire while a control room staff member kept the emergency caller talking on the phone to find out where the men were to rescue them.

The fire service has again urged people to check their own smoke detectors were working and ensure they have an exit strategy planned in case of a blaze.

Firefighters also warned about the dangers of leaving chip pans unattended.
