Boy, 10, pulls plug on aqueduct

A schoolboy from Denbighshire has pulled the plug on the world famous Pontcysyllte aqueduct.

The 1.5 million litres of water contained in Thomas Telford's 204 year-old structure take two hours to cascade into the River Dee.

David Halligan, Ysgol Bryn Collen primary school in Llangollen, was given the privilege of pulling the plug on the Unesco World Heritage site ahead of a four-day inspection by British Waterways.

The 10-year-old, who is one of a handful of people to ever start the process of draining the waterway, won the right after a competition and said the experience was "definitely one for the grandchildren".

The next time the aqueduct will be drained is likely to be in 10 years time.
