Stadium shoppers warning
Millennium Stadium
There are fears that Christmas profits could be hit
A report has warned that shoppers could turn their backs permanently on Cardiff city centre because of massive events being held at the Millennium Stadium.

And there are fears that crucial trade in the run-up to Christmas could be "crippled" due to three rugby matches planned at the stadium on consecutive Saturdays in November.

The findings are contained in a new report by Cardiff County Council, which examined the economic impact of the Millennium Stadium and the Rugby World Cup on the city.

The report calls for a shoppers' survey, to find out what is putting people off going shopping on match and event days.

Greater communication call

It warns that shoppers could shop elsewhere on match days, get out of the "Cardiff habit" and stop shopping in the city centre.

Retailers in the city would prefer more events and matches at the stadium to be staged on Sundays or in the evening.

The report also said consideration should be given to improved public transport infrastructure, including looking at the location of the central bus station and improved links between the city and Cardiff International Airport.

The report, by the council's economic scrutiny committee, goes on to call for a consultation exercise on proposals to introduce a drinking ban in public places on match days.

Greater communication by Millennium Stadium plc is also urged in the report's conclusions.
