The Welsh Assembly Government is being urged to support plans, which it is claimed would create 180 jobs, by keeping open a mine at Bridgend.
The Unite union says letting Celtic Energy continue at the Parc Slip opencast site for an extra five years would help the economy.
The results of a public inquiry in February have not been announced and the assembly government saying it cannot comment at this stage.
