Manifesto launch for Plaid contender

Helen Mary Jones: full national status in stages
The last contender for the leadership of Plaid Cymru has launched her manifesto, with a call for Wales to achieve full national status in stages.

The Llanelli AM Helen Mary Jones defines this status as "equality with Scotland today - equality with Ireland tomorrow."

She believed that sovereignty should rest with the people of Wales " and cannot be compromised."

Among her other priorities listed in her manifesto is a call for law-making powers for the Welsh Assembly by 2003.

She also said that Plaid should aim to have overall control of the Assembly by 2003 and that the party should also aim to "move to a clearer opposition stance" to Labour in the administration.

Ms Jones followed fellow leadership contenders Ieuan Wyn Jones , the Ynys Mon AM and MP, and Jill Evans MEP who have already launched their manifestos.

The election for a new Plaid Cymru leader follows the decision by Dafydd Wigley to stand down on health grounds.

Earlier this week Jill Evans launched her campaign manifesto for the Plaid Cymru presidency by denying that she was trying to fudge the constitutional issue.

Ms Evans said that while the debate on the constitution was ongoing, the priority was to influence the debate in Europe to ensure that Wales had a say in decision-making.

The third challenger and party favourite, Ieuan Wyn Jones, has already launched his campaign on a platform of full status for Wales within the European Union.
