MEP launches Plaid manifesto

Jill Evans says she is not 'fudging' the constitutional issue
Jill Evans MEP has launched her campaign manifesto for the Plaid Cymru presidency by denying that she was trying to fudge the constitutional issue.

But in a ten-point manifesto which calls for greater prominence to be given to rebuilding communities, Ms Evans said that the policy pledges were not ranked in order of importance.

The MEP was in Cardiff Bay launching her manifesto to succeed Dafydd Wigley as Plaid's leader in next month's vote.

Mr Wigley is stepping down from the post on health grounds.

Ms Evans said that while the debate on the constitution was ongoing, the priority was to influence the debate in Europe to ensure that Wales had a say in decision-making.

Ms Evans added that no one in Plaid Cymru discussed independence because no one in Europe could be independent.

She stressed her socialist credentials and her experience of over twenty years in politics.

She also said that she was attracting support from the party's grass roots.

But she admitted that to her knowledge she had not attracted any support from Plaid Assembly Members or MPs.

But she said she had the support of fellow Plaid MEP, Eirug Wyn.

Fellow leadership contender Helen Mary Jones, the Llanelli AM, launches her manifesto for the party leadership on Wednesday.

The third challenger and party favourite, Ieuan Wyn Jones, the Ynys Mon MP and AM, has already launched his campaign on a platform of full status for Wales within the European Union.
