Beaches are considered sewage contamination-free
More than 60 beaches in Wales are recommended in this year's Good Beach Guide.

The Marine Conservation Society report includes a total of 215 beaches around the UK.

The Good Beach Guide 2000 - published by in booklets and on the internet - contains information on water quality and sewage discharges at more than 1,000 UK beaches.

It recommends only those the society has considered to be free from sewage contamination.

"The public can now make an informed choice whether to take the plunge or not, taking a proactive approach to protect themselves and their families from the hazard of sewage pollution," said society coastal pollution officer Kate Hutchinson.

The guide is split into two booklets - England and the Channel Islands, and Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man.

Divers, windsurfers, canoeists, surfers and sailors are more susceptible to the health risks of sewage bacterial pollution because of the longer time that they are immersed in the water.

The recommended beaches had to achieve the highest European water quality standards during the 1999 bathing season.
